The key idea here is that the right place to start a civil claim depends on the value, and for substantial claims you have a choice. When a claim is worth £100,000 or more, you may commence it either in the County Court or in the High Court. The High Court has unlimited monetary jurisdiction, but the County Court can still deal with high-value cases on the appropriate track and, if needed, the matter can be transferred or allocated to the High Court. The Supreme Court isn’t used for ordinary first-instance civil claims like this; it handles specific appeals and very limited types of cases. So the correct approach reflects this flexibility: start in either court depending on what’s most appropriate for the case.
